Travels

I remember going to Coutts in the 60's and what fun to go to Mr. Rogers store. To go across the border down to Sunburst to the swimming pool.
Staying in the McTaggart Motel from Monday to Friday each week. Monte seeing the snake.
Dad

The summer we went to Penticton and carried our own candy store in the trailer.

Lanny getting a little dog and hitch hiking home.

Does anyone remember at McTaggart's motel there was a piece of farm equipment in the feild in front of the motel with a long/tall extending arm and a bird made a nest in the top of the arm. We kids took turns climbing up to look at the babies. How about Rook games at the motel?

After swimming at Sunburst I recall purchasing a taffy like candy that was flat and rectangular in wax paper. It seemed quite long. Anyone recall the name?

Camping and running around at Big Horn Spring (something like that).

I remember a magical night at Windermere when we all went down the shore line and found a quiet cove with a lot of sand (Mom and Dad and everyone) and we poured lighter fluid on a big log and set it a drift in the dark at night. That left an impression on me.

Anyone recall the Flintstone park near Penticton?
Gillan

Throwing lighted fireworks out of the back of the station wagon to scare horses on the way back from the temple baptism trips- had to be dad sanctioned otherwise it wouldn't have happened.

Driving with Dad to Winnepeg Manitoba just before Christmas (our car broke down ... we had blankets over us in the car) ... on the way back Dad wouldn't stop to go to bathroom ... my teeth were floating ... so were his!
Jody

Dad and I drove to see Lanny on an island in B.C. ... Lanny and I went out in a boat and caught a small shark.
Jody

At Windermere/Coldstream the island that we launched the burning log from was dubbed “Naked Island” by us. Something to do with a guy and a girl we saw there I think.
Lori

Who hit the deer at the Gallagher lake reunion? I am thinking Jody and Lanny with Bailey?
Lori

It was Bailey who hit the deer ... at least that's how I remember it (we were driving a Ford Galaxie 500 station wagon).
Jody

As far as the deer, Jody was driving and it didn't die right away until someone got the tire iron out and clubbed it.  It smashed in the radiator grill.  Noel, Bailey and Jody and I were in the car.

Jody and I went out to a winter camp at Camp Gardner and someone left early and there weren't enough inside seats, so we travelled back in a pickup box with no topper at 20 below zero.  it was only about 20 miles but someone should have been arrested.  I've never been colder.

Then we went to Waterton and camped near red rock canyon at a creek with Brother Fairbanks as the only leader and when Ron Booth broke his arm showing off for a family of girls, as he went on the zip line, Brother Fairbanks took him to hospital in Calgary and left us on our own.  There was a log/tree across the creek and since Robin Hood was big, we made staves and fought on the log two  at a time.  Kevin Caldwell got knocked off and his body went under the log upstream feet first and his neck and chin got stuck on the log so he couldn't go past the log and get out, the water was very fast.  We finally had to take a staff and poke his head down under the water so he could float free.   We all survived somehow until Dad who was in the Bishopric came to pick us up and offered the scouts 25 cents a can to dive into Red Rock Canyon and retrieve pop cans that were on the bottom 12 feet down in near zero water.  It was a little like how Bill Cosby's kids did good on the broken glass and brick playground until the adults moved in with the new equipment.  "Never lost one kid, then the adult's moved in."

  1. Mexico. Mom sent us with a gallon container (or so it seemed) of vitamins. Dad didn't make us take them (sorry Dad I am outing you). Instead we bought slingshots and we used the vitamins as ammo for the slingshots. When we stayed at a hotel (I think in Mexico city) we were in a courtyard facing room (the window of the hotel room faced into an inner courtyard- not a Marriott) One morning an older woman who was putting on make-up and getting dressed in her bathroom about 10 or so floors below us and across the courtyard had her window open, it opened from the top out so it was a perfect angle for a slingshot surprise from above. Dad and Stan were out conducting business and so Lanny and Monte and I (with the lights off in our suite) were taking turns firing vitamins at this unsuspecting woman. I don't think we ever hit her but as a 12 year old boy it left an impression.

On that trip I got really sick when we arrived at Mexico city. I recall being dropped off the night we got into town at the hotel room and tucked into a big bed and everyone else went out to eat. I was more sick than I was scared to be by myself but I was pretty scared. I can still remember when they arrived back at the hotel room- they had found a Sambo's restaurant and brought me a hamburger (I know- its always about the hamburgers) it didn't taste much like a hamburger. As Dad said Monte got lost at the Zoo in Mexico city when Dad and Stan were off doing business. Lanny can probably fill in details. I am sure he felt more responsible for Monte than I did at that time. I recall a balloon having something to do with it. On the return drive to Canada Stan and I got Montezuma's revenge in the worst way. I can remember laying next to Stan in the back of the Station wagon driving mile after painful mile and wishing I could die.

Another movie we saw in Mexico was Paint Your Wagon. All the movies we saw were in English with Spanish subtitles. I do remember everything you shared about it Monte.
