My paper route was 16th and 17th Avenues between Center and Edmonton trail. We folded papers in the alley on the west side of Center in a Quonset hut that was 150 degrees in the summer. Jody and Lanny rode bikes with wing or monkey handlebars (there is a big difference) and strapped their papers to the handlebars. Their routes were probably over by the time I got going. I was either not confident enough or too small to attempt the handlebar experience- or just didn't have access to a bike so I pulled a radio flyer wagon around with my papers. I never felt like I ever got that job working in my favor- never felt organized, on top of it, never made money but ate well. So, I would collect door to door with that dark brown canvas covered flip/clip book that folded back so you could clip your payment coupons in them and I would go right past Peters Drive-in with just enough money in my pocket from collections to buy a burger, fries and a milkshake. I am pretty sure they have all the money I earned and some I needed to send in to the Herald. I ate dinner there too many times to remember. And once again the hamburger theme emerges.

When Lanny was driving for Northern Messenger in the dead of winter I volunteered to start his van one morning and instead I drained the battery. Felt really bad about that.
ReplyDeleteNot only did I take over Lanny's car- the Vomet but I also took his job at Calgary Advertising Distributors when he went on his mission. Driving a red van delivering telephone books to homes in Calgary.
